About us
Núria GavaldÃ
Núria holds a BA in English Philology (Universitat de Barcelona), an MA in Phonetics (University College London), an MA in Forensic Linguistics (Universitat Pompeu Fabra), and a PhD in Applied Linguistics (Universitat Pompeu Fabra). She has worked in several universities and departments (mainly UPF, UAB, UB, UNIR) and is currently a Lecturer at the Department of Modern Languages & English Studies at Universitat de Barcelona. Her main research interests are L2 speech acquisition and forensic phonetics and linguistics, in particular, the study of individual variation in phonological processes in L1 speakers and in Spanish and Catalan speakers of English as L2. She has published in the fields of L2 speech and forensic phonetics and linguistics in national and international journals. She is also an English pronunciation coach and has created an Online Course in English pronunciation for Spanish and Catalan speakers. More information here.
Juli Cebrian
Juli graduated in English Philology from the Universitat de Barcelona and holds an MA and a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Toronto, Canada. He is Associate Professor (professor agregat) at the department of English Philology at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in English phonetics and phonology, oral skills and pronunciation, grammar, second language acquisition and research methods. He has also taught English for specific purposes at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya and linguistics courses at the University of Toronto. His research investigates the acquisition of the phonology of a second or foreign language by adult learners, and his interests extend to phonetics, bilingualism, psycholinguistics, ESL/EFL and the teaching of pronunciation. He has participated in a series of funded research projects on the acquisition of second language speech and experimental phonetics. His publications include numerous articles in international journals and specialized books, as well as a series of English practice books designed for Catalan/Spanish learners of English. Celia Gorba
Celia is a linguist sepecialized in the field of second language (L2) acquisition. She holds a BA in English and Spanish Studies (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, UAB), an MA in Advanced English Studies: Multilingualism and Acquisition of English (UAB) and a PhD in English Philology (UAB). Currently, she is postdoctoral researcher, thanks to a Margarita Salas grant, and collaborates in Juli Cebrian’s lab (UAB) and in the Grup d’Estudis de Prosòdia (GrEP, Universitat Pompeu Fabra). Her research interests include factors influencing the acquisition of L2 speech, both at a segmental and suprasegmental level, such as language experience and lexical processing, as well as the benefits of perceptual training and the use of gestures on both perception and production skills.
